In the graphic design industry, several tools are used to edit and create different types of media. One of the most widely used tool is Adobe Photoshop software. Through the growth and development of software, the importance of the program and its impact on the design community have also grown.

Brothers Knoll created the first version of Photoshop in 1987 which worked with gray-scale image. They later turned the program on a larger scale. In 1988 they showed a program to Adobe. Adobe bought the rights for Photoshop the same year, Thomas Knoll continued to write code for the first official release. In 1990, Adobe released Adobe Photoshop 1.0 for Macintosh only.

Significance

Adobe Photoshop has grown into one of the most widely used software for editing photos in the graphic design industry. All major printers, designers and publishers work with file types exported to Photoshop. Due to its entire suite of products that work together, Photoshop has become the industry standard.

Its primary use and function is photo and image editing. Photoshop supports a wide range of files to achieve this functionality. The software allows the designer to change the image and touch up pictures or fully develop it digitally.

Photoshop is integrated into the Adobe suite of media software to increase the strength of all the programs in the suite. This allows objects to be transferred between applications quickly and efficiently. In addition to built-in integration with other Adobe softwares, Photoshop has many pre-built tools to help designers achieve the required or desired effect. These tools are known as filters and they are powerful enough to change the face of photography by adjusting the filter settings that alter the appearance of each filter. Newer versions of Photoshop have introduced tools to work with 3D applications.
